Thornborough Henges NMP
The Thornborough Henges ALSF NMP (3897) was done as a major contribution to the English Heritage Conservation Plan for the area immediately surrounding one of the most intriguing prehistoric ritual complexes in Britain. The project was carried out by staff from West Yorkshire Archaeological Services (WYAS). The importance in the north of England of the three late Neolithic henges at Thornborough is further enhanced by their context within a group of seven henges lying between the rivers Ure and Swale – the largest group outside Wessex. The Land around the henges has long been under cultivation but large scale gravel extraction has increasingly become a feature of this landscape and has gradually encroached upon the henges and the known associated monuments.
