ANGLO SAXON: FROM RUNES TO WRITING
Where: 1066 Battle of Hastings, Abbey & Battlefield
In an 11th century chamber in the great gatehouse of Battle Abbey, your class can learn to write in runes and discover how language developed during Saxon times and after the Norman Conquest. They will match the Old English words for the days of the week, food, clothes and parts of the body with their modern equivalents. They will also find out how parchment was made; write with quill pens and make an Anglo-Saxon Chronicle to take back to school.
