Green Flag Awards and Green Heritage Site Scheme
Green Heritage Sites are a specific acreditation within the Green Flag Award scheme that can be applied for by any green space that is applying for the Green Flag Award.
English Heritage sponsors this award which is managed by the Civic Trust on behalf of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and the GreenFlag Advisory Body.
The aim of Green Heritage Site status is to promote the value of and the best practice in the care and upkeep of historic sites. This can give added benefits to a site by generating community interest and securing a long term future for the site that will be valued and cherished by all who use it.
There are over 200 municipal public parks that are registered by English Heritage as being of special historic interest, and there are many other public green spaces like cemeteries, town squares and country parks registered too. A 2001 survey of local authorities (Public Park Assessment) estimates that there are 2,500 historic parks of national and local historic importance (45,400 hectares).
The Green Heritage Site award is open to all sites, not just registered ones. The only condition is that sites are 30 year's old or older.
Green Heritage Site status can be gained by completing the Green Flag application procedures together with a conservation or restoration plan, details of how the site is promoted in terms of its heritage and a statement of know more that 250 word indicating why the site is important in terms of national or local historic importance. All the details of this can be found on the Green Flag Awards website.
In 2008-2009 there were 42 sites celebrating after being recognised as the country's best green spaces for heritage conservation. All 42 have received a Green Flag Award 2008-9 and also achieved Green Heritage Site accreditation.
