Cathedral Repairs

Summary
English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation provide funding towards the repair and maintenance of Church of England and Roman Catholic cathedrals which are listed grade I or II* and / or are situated within a conservation area.

Eligible applicants
The organisation or body with legal responsibility for the repair and upkeep of the cathedral. In addition the cathedral must have ecclesiastical exemption from listed building and conservation area control (that is, it must be either a Church of England cathedral covered by the Care of Cathedrals Measure 1990 or a Roman Catholic cathedral under the control of the Historic Churches Committee).

Eligible projects
We can only fund work: in parts of the cathedral covered by ecclesiastical exemption from listed building and conservation area controls; that has been identified in a current five year plan; that can be completed within one financial year.

Examples of the types of work we can fund are: work that forms part of an ongoing cyclical repair programme, such as smaller roof and masonry projects and repairs to windows and rainwater goods; one-off repair projects that are unlikely to attract funding from other public bodies or through public appeals; archaeological surveys and investigations undertaken as part of a programme of repair work that we have agreed to fund, installing fire detection systems and passive measures, such as fire doors, and upgrading of crossing tower floors; works that provide improved access for maintenance and inspection; metric surveys, such as base plans and photogrammetry; access audits; archive conservation and associated security measures; and conservation plans.

Ineligible work
We do not normally fund the following types of work: repairs costing less than £15,000, including fees and VAT (this does not apply to non-repair projects); routine maintenance and minor repairs; alterations and improvements to the building, such as new facilities; conjectural reinstatement or reconstruction of lost historic building features; building services and rewiring; redecoration; work carried out before a written grant offer has been made and accepted.

Timetable
The deadline for returning your completed application form is 15th September.
