Kensal Green Cemetery was the first of the great London cemeteries
established to cope with the huge population explosion which London
experienced at the height of the Industrial Revolution. It houses
some spectacular pieces of Victorian Gothic mausoleum architecture
and some illustrious residents, including Isambard Kingdom Brunel,
Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex (the sixth son of King
George III) and his sister Princess Sophia. English Heritage helped
to restore the Dissenters' Chapel in 1997.
There are plans to restore the Anglican Chapel and some of the
monuments. Tours, arranged by the Friends of Kensal Green Cemetery,
are given every Sunday at 2pm. These include a visit to the
catacombs on the first and third Sunday of every month (under 12s
not admitted to the catacombs).
