Her Majesty the Queen reopened the Albert Memorial in 1998, after one of the most ambitious conservation projects ever undertaken by English Heritage. It took four years to repair structural damage to the memorial, which involved stripping the monument to its cast-iron core and rebuilding it with all the original elements conserved. A fully-guided tour provides exclusive access behind the railings of the site.
