Commanding a magnificent view of the Pennines, medieval Brough Castle stands within the earthworks of a Roman fort guarding the strategic Stainmore routeway. The impressive tower-keep dates from c. 1200, replacing an earlier stronghold destroyed by William the Lion of Scotland in 1174. Like so many other castles hereabouts, Brough was restored in the 17th century by Lady Anne Clifford and traces of her interior fittings and kitchen gardens can still be seen.

The delightful St Michael's Parish Church, a 2 minute walk from the castle, has an extensive exhibition about Brough, Brough Castle and the church itself. This living church is open daily between 10am and 4pm, and entrance is free (not managed by English Heritage).
