Heritage Protection Review

A major new policy development was the review of heritage protection carried out by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport in 2003. This led to the Government's decision statement on the future of the statutory protections for heritage assets, which proposed the following new measures:

  • A unified register of historic assets, bringing together the separate regimes of listing, scheduling and registering sites and buildings of historic interest
  • A new consent regime for making changes to historic places
  • Better documentation for owners of registered sites
