About the NMR

The National Monuments Record (NMR) is the public archive of English Heritage.  In our archive we hold over 10 million historic photographs, architectural and archaeological reports, plans and other items related to the historic environment of England.   We can help people interested in their local history, or those with a more general interest in the history of England.

However, our archive is not limited to historic buildings.  You may be surprised by what we hold; for example our collection of aerial photographs of England contains over two and a half million images dating from 1946 to the present day.  We also hold many photographs useful to social historians, like our collection of 1930s Art Deco cinema exteriors and interiors, and unique collections of vintage photographs of historic London taken during in the middle of the nineteenth century.  The material we hold can provide help to people researching their family history by enabling them to build a better picture of where their ancestors lived, worked and played.

We are also responsible for the development and management of the national historic environment databases of buildings and sites in England and its territorial waters, together known as the 'Heritage Data Sets' (which include the Listed Buildings dataset), and the development of heritage information partnerships with others.
