Visitor Centre & Introductory Video

With it’s spectacular location on Cornwall’s dramatic and windswept Atlantic coastline, Tintagel is a place of myths where the legend of King Arthur was born.

Let our short introductory video ‘Searching for King Arthur’, recreate the story of the castle and its inhabitants over the ages. Then step back in time and experience for yourself the magic of this wonderful place.

The Island and Castle

Suggested time needed: 1- 3 hours
Climb the rugged trail across to the island,  explore the ruined  13th century castle built by the Earls of Cornwall and watch Atlantic breakers crash against the cliffs and into Merlin’s cave.

Pass through the medieval ruins and step back into the dark ages! Care is required; the cave is cut off by tides twice daily.

Beach Cafe

Suggested time needed: 30 minutes
Relax in the newly refurbished beach cafe and choose from a selection of snacks and refreshments sourced from fine local Cornish produce.

Shop

Suggested time needed: 15 minutes
Browse the superb shop which specialises in books, medieval and Arthurian themed gifts and toys, jams and chutneys.

Pendennis Castle

Distance: 45 miles
An intact Tudor castle built by Henry VIII with stunning views over the Fal Estuary. The castle also has 19th century defences, a World War I guard house and World War II secret tunnels and big guns.

Pendennis Castle is Cornwall’s greatest coastal fortress. 

Restormel Castle

Distance: 25 miles
A pretty medieval castle ruin set in beautiful scenery, Restormel is one of the best picnic spots in Cornwall and is a fantastic place for children to explore.

King Arthur’s Great Halls, Tintagel

Distance: Tintagel Village
King Arthur’s Great Hall is a granite and slate building dedicated to the legend of King Arthur. It contains a round table and granite thrones surrounded by 72 fabulous stained glass windows, depicting the Arthurian legend.
