Learn all about the history of the site with our selection of books for children which delve into monastic life. Learn more about how monks would have lived at the Abbey in The Work of Man and God exhibition which houses lively and interactive displays. During the school holidays there are regular children’s trails.

Children can have endless fun exploring the Abbey ruins. Clamber through the stonework or run across the large expanses of grass. There are plenty of hidy holes to find and imagine what life would have been like for a monk living at the Abbey.

Byland Abbey

One of the earliest Gothic buildings in the North Byland Abbey is a stunning example of one of the great Yorshire Cistercian abbeys. Its great circular window, now surviving only in part, was probably the model for the rose window of York Minster.
Pickering Castle
