About the Building
As one of the regional offices of an organisation supporting the historic environment it is nice to know that the building from which we work has a history of its own.
The location of the original York train station at Toft Green in 1841 meant that the surrounding area became busy with hotels for weary pioneering train travellers and 37 Tanner Row was born. Built by the brewer William Hotham, from which the Hotham Meeting Room in the York office got its name.
Building work began in 1852 and the Winn’s George Hotel was opened on the 6 June 1855 named after its first tenant Thomas Winn and his previous inn The George on Coney Street. Over the years the hotel changed hands a few times and became both Holliday’s North Eastern Hotel and Halliwell’s North Eastern Hotel, again the name has been used for Tanner Row’s second meeting room.
The opening of the new station and its neighbouring hotel, (now the Royal York) outside the city walls lead to the closure of the original station. 37 Tanner Row was transformed into temporary offices in 1899 for its new owner North Eastern Railway Company after being bought by the company for the bargain sum of £5000.
37 Tanner Row remained railway property until recently and was eventually leased by English Heritage in 1999 when it became the home of the York Office who refurbished it, creating the office we know and love now.
