Days Out Worth Talking About Framlingham Castle Take the brand new audio tour which leads you on a stunning walk along the tops of the castle walls. The tour has two versions; the ‘upright’ version is an informative guide for adults that gives a detailed insight in to the estate’s history. There is also a ‘Topsy Turvy’ tour for children.  Appreciate the castle’s structure and design, understand the role of the wider landscape and hear stories of the castle’s inhabitants and their relationship to the sovereign powers. 

Poorhouse

Suggested time needed: 30 minutes
Step inside the 18th century poorhouse and explore eight centuries of colourful heritage with the new exhibition, ‘Framlingham Castle: From Powerhouse to Poorhouse’.  A lively animated video sets the scene, while colourful exhibition panels and displays highlight the key characters and events in the castle’s history.

Lanman Museum

Suggested time needed: 30 minutes
Days Out Worth Talking About Framlingham Castle Situated on the 1st floor of the poorhouse, this local history museum gives an insight into the everyday lives of people who lived in Framlingham and the surrounding area.

Framlingham Mere & Town Walk

Suggested time needed:1 hour
Pick up the new trail leaflet and explore the castle’s surroundings. Start with a bit of nature-spotting as the trail takes you around the mere, a unique environment for over 80 species of birds and almost 300 types of plant. The trail also takes you to nearby buildings of historical importance and allows you to appreciate the connection between the castle and the development of this thriving Suffolk town. (Please note that sturdy footwear is often a necessity when walking round the mere.)

Orford Castle

Distance: 15 miles
Days Out Worth Talking About Framlingham Castle Discover one of England’s most complete and unusual keeps. A medieval royal fortress built by Henry II between 1165 and 1173. It has a warren of passageways and chambers to be explored, with a winding staircase right to the top where you can enjoy spectacular views of Orford Ness.  Take time out to visit the picturesque town of Orford, with its antique shops and smokery.

Saxtead Green Post Mill

Distance: 2.5 miles
Come in and experience a working windmill! There has been a mill at Saxtead Green since 1287. Clamber up the winding wooden stairs and watch the mechanism turn on its post to face the wind The present mill has recently been refurbished and is in good working order.

Framlingham Town

Distance: Adjacent
Explore the pretty market town of Framlingham, some of the town is just as it was in the castle’s heyday! Its packed with historic buildings reflecting many architectural periods, including Tudor, Stuart, Regency, and Victorian periods.  Spend time in cosy tea rooms, restaurants and boutiques or visit the market, which is still held on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
