Suffolk ALSF NMP
Funded by the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund (ALSF) the Suffolk ALSF NMP project (3987) assessed the archaeological resource in potential mineral extraction areas. Working in areas adjacent to the previous Suffolk Coast NMP project, the first area that the project team looked at was the sand and gravel rich Felixstowe peninsula. Interim NMP reports are routinely produced for each of the key areas and the Suffolk report highlighted newly recognised sites, such as a possible Neolithic cursus, as well as the potential of the NMP data for analysis of a prehistoric landscapes.
The predominant theme to emerge from this area is one of a prehistoric and/or Roman landscape defined by an extensive system of inter-connected ditched trackways; new relationships were established between previously known isolated fragments. The figure illustrates areas where the routes may intersect, which along with the relationship with settlement in the area deserve further study to understand the chronology and land use.
Evidence of earlier landuse was found in the form of this possible cursus monument at Kirton.
