Noel Park Conservation Area, Haringey
Local authority
London Borough of Haringey
Brief Description and history:
Noel Park was designated around 1983. It was developed by the Artisans and General Dwellings Company between 1884 and 1929 with over half of the estate being completed by 1900. Influenced by the Garden Suburb movement, the estate itself proved influential in the development of council housing, introducing a variety of sizes of property with both front and back gardens, laid out in a broad grid with tree lined avenues. The buildings are predominantly simple two-storey brick dwellings with decorative red and stock bricks with white sash windows, pointed and Dutch gables, projecting or sunken porches, and low front walls which add a picturesque playfulness to the streets.
Is it at risk?
Yes. The estate has suffered from extensive piecemeal alteration which has eroded the character. These changes include the loss of original windows and doors, rendering, inappropriate roofing materials and loss of boundary walls.
What, if anything, is being done to save it?
The council introduced a Neighbourhood Initiative in 1999 to generate ideas and encourage regeneration and improved management.
There are two active residents’ groups: Noel Park North Residents Association and the recently formed Conservation Area Advisory Group which are seeking to raise awareness of the issues.
