Winners

English Heritage has for the seventh year partnered heritage bodies in Scotland, Wales and Ireland to encourage specialists to present the results of their heritage research to a wider public.
Congratulations to the winners of this year’s Awards, presented at the British Association’s Festival of Science in Liverpool on 11 September 2008 by Julian Richards:

Winner (£1500)

  • Peter Marsden – The "Heritage Shore" at Hastings, East Sussex

Joint Runner-up (£250)

  • Shirley Curtis – Stable Nitrogen Isotope Analysis of Bone Collagen: Weaning Practices at Medieval Poulton, Cheshire, UK

Joint Runner-up (£250)

  • Nigel Melton – The Gristhorpe Man Project: the 21st century investigation of a 19th century discovery

Under-30 (£500)

  • Sophie Beckett – Girl or Boy? Poor Hygiene or Poor Diet. A Urinary Stone from an Anglo-Saxon Burial.

Ten presentations by the short-listed finalists, covering a wide range of subjects and approaches made this a day to remember. The presentations were judged by the audience and by a panel of heritage professionals chaired by Julian Richards.

English Heritage believes that people’s care and value for the historic environment come from a better understanding of it. Science and research, and the ability to communicate them effectively to a wide and diverse audience, is key to engendering this understanding. We are very pleased to co-sponsor the awards and to encourage specialists to tell more people, especially students and young people, about their research and what it is telling us about our past.

Information about the Awards for the Presentation of Heritage Research 2010 will be posted on this website in September 2009 (there will be a break from the awards in 2009).
