Survey of London List of Publications
May 2008 sees the publication of two new volumes of the Survey of London: South and East Clerkenwell (volume 46, ISBN 0300137273) and Northern Clerkenwell and Pentonville (volume 47, ISBN 0300139373). They are to be published at £75 each, or £135 the pair, by Yale University Press www.yalebooks.co.uk, under the sponsorship of the Paul Mellon Centre, and are the first Survey volumes to have photographs integrated with the text alongside the handsome architectural drawings for which the series is famed. They also make widespread use of colour images for the first time.
List of Publications
The following is a list of all Survey of London publications. All except Clerkenwell are now out of print but are widely available secondhand. Titles in bold are now available to view online.
There are two series, the Main or Parish Series and the Monograph Series.
1) The Main Series deal with buildings and building developments within particular districts - usually one of the old administrative parishes. A parish may require several volumes, one or more of which may be devoted to single buildings, for example the third Chelsea volume deals exclusively with the old parish church. The volume on Brooke House (vol. 28) was the first in a projected series on Hackney.
2) Some other single buildings are treated in the shorter free-standing Monograph Series.
Readers should be aware that the scope of individual volumes varies greatly. The earlier volumes are highly selective and include very few buildings erected after c.1800. Southern Lambeth (vol. 26, published 1956) was the first volume to address the 19th-century suburban development which accounts for much of modern London.
