English Heritage has published a vision of how the management of maritime archaeology in England should be taken forward in Taking to the Water which states that the current legislative and planning regime for maritime archaeology in England does not adequately permit the adoption of approaches and standards that are regarded as routine in terrestrial heritage management. Implementation of Policy

Since the introduction of the National Heritage Act (2002) and the creation of the English Heritage Maritime Team, a series of research projects and initiatives have been supported including Outreach Accessibility and Training; Resource Enhancement and Creation of Knowledge; and Preservation of the Historic Environment.
