Visitor Information

Opening Times

The admission to all our properties are detailed under each property in the Properties section.

Admission to all or properties is free for members of English Heritage and for holders of the Overseas Visitor Pass unless otherwise stated. Most special events are also free to members and pass holders.

  • Over 70 properties are open all year round.
  • Some properties may only be visited by prior arrangement: if so, contact details are given.
  • A few properties have a keykeeper. Please either contact them or ring the number shown under the property. Every effort will be made to provide access, but we strongly recommend that you check well in advance of your visit to avoid disappointment.
  • When a property is described as open at "Any reasonable time", please visit only during daylight hours. This is for safety reasons and also to avoid disturbance.

  • Concessions are available for senior citizens, unemployed people on production of UB40 and students on production of student union card.

Guides and Tours

Souvenir Guides are on sale at almost all the properties where an entrance fee is charged or through our postal sales service. Call +44 (0)1604 781163. Personal stereo guides are available at nearly 40 properties. Interactive audio tours allow you to control the information you hear as you move around. At some sites, we regret the audio tour is not available on days when special events are being held.

Early Learners

Many of our sites have special features, exhibitions or educational facilities.

  • Look out for properties with free children's activity sheets.
  • Baby changing facilities may also be available.
  • Over the year, we host a programme of Special Events, most of which are especially suitable for children.

Members of English Heritage

As well as giving you free entry to our own properties, becoming a member of English Heritage allows you to enjoy half or reduced-price admission to numerous other historic attractions throughout the country.

Look out for:

  • the Weald and Downland Museum
  • Flag Fen Excavations
  • Pendle Heritage Centre
  • Merchants Adventurers' Hall
  • Jorvik Viking Centre
  • the Archaeological Resource Centre
  • the six historic attractions in the care of Sussex Past

Remember to bring your membership card along, otherwise the normal admission charge will apply. We regret that no refunds can be made.

Overseas Visitors

Visitors from overseas can gain unlimited free access to English Heritage properties for one week or two, with our Overseas Visitor Pass. It's great value, for an adult for the whole week. Family and two adult passes are also available.

Shops

Many properties have shops offering an attractive range of souvenirs, gifts and books. And if all that makes you hungry... Refreshments are available at many properties.

  • Our restaurants or tearooms are often located within the historic buildings themselves.
  • Visitors are also welcome to picnic in the grounds of many sites.

Displays and Exhibitions

At most properties, display panels explain how the property appeared in the past, often with the help of reconstruction drawings or interactive displays. Other properties host temporary exhibitions of paintings and sculptures.

Welcome to Visitors on Bicycles

More and more people are travelling to our properties by bicycle. To find out more about which routes are convenient for our sites, call Sustrans on +44 (0)117 929 0888 or visit their website at www.sustrans.org.uk
