Who can make free visits?

Free admission is granted to educational establishments and organised groups as listed below on condition that the visit is properly organised and educational work is undertaken on site.

It is a condition of free admission that teachers run their own pupils' educational work during their visit.  Our audio wands will not be available to groups who are admitted under the free educational visit scheme.

We do not permit the use of outside providers, such as tour guides, re-enactors, artists and theatre groups, to work with pupils or students on site.

Free visits will normally be granted to the following establishments and organised groups.

  • Schools
  • Colleges of Further and Higher Education
  • Universities including accredited Extra-mural or Continuing Education courses
  • Home Educators who are members of Education Otherwise, The Home Service, Home Education Advisory Service, and TEACH

  • Scouts, Guides, Sunday Schools, similar youth organisations and the Young Archaeologist's Club
  • Organisations bringing groups of children, youths or adults with special learning needs or disabilities, such as RNIB, gifted children or mentoring services

  • English as a Foreign Language (EFL) groups and Language schools
  • Organisers of study holidays, such as summer courses, summer schools and lecture tours for adults arranged on a commercial basis between Universities and holiday organisations
