Gloucestershire NMP

Location map - the red shows a more detailed map The Gloucestershire NMP project will map c 75% of the county of Gloucestershire concentrating on the two areas of the Cotswolds and the Forest of Dean.

Gloucestershire is a large county with varied topography and it is anticipated that the areas to be mapped will offer significantly different types of archaeological features.

The first area, The Forest of Dean, has now been completely mapped and work is underway on a report on the key findings. Within the Forest of Dean the range of archaeological features was rather different to those usually encountered in NMP projects. Even on the Cotswolds there has been a wider range of features than are often found with a strong emphasis so far on remains related to agricultural activity.

Some of the key findings related to thematic aspects of the sites recorded together with general assessments of the two different areas mapped as part of the project are detailed below.

    The aerial survey of the Forest of Dean is part of the broader Gloucestershire NMP. The mapping and recording phase of the project is complete and a report is due soon.
  • Ridge and furrow thumbnail
    The remains of various forms of previous agricultural regimes are visible from the air for large parts of the North Cotswolds
  • Sheepfold thumbnail
    The various remains of features related to animal husbandry in the North Cotswolds, an activity that was of great importance to the area.
  • Cotswolds thumbnail
    The Cotswolds survey forms the bulk of the larger Gloucestershire NMP project.
  • HAA thumbnail
    The North Cotswolds had numerous sites related to military activity but many that were visible on aerial photographs are no longer tracable on the ground.
