Online Galleries

The National Monuments Record (NMR) holds millions of historic and contemporary photographs covering England’s archaeology, architecture, social and local history.

Over a quarter of a million of these photographs are available to view online via our websites Viewfinder and Images of England, whilst the remainder can be accessed by visitors to our Swindon archive.

Bill Brandt – Endangered Buildings 1941-43
Internationally renowned for his later work on landscapes and nudes, Bill Brandt was commissioned by the National Buildings Record in 1941 to photograph buildings endangered by enemy bombing.
Images of England Competition Winners
The Images of England project was created in 1999 to provide a 'point in time' photographic record of the 370,000 listed buildings in England at the turn of the millennium.
The Alfred Newton Collection 1894-1907
Images of village life, taken at stops on the Great Central Railway which ran between London and Nottingham.
The Nigel Temple Postcard Collection
The Nigel Temple Collection comprises of over 5,000 postcards that feature public parks and gardens, including Italianate, rose, rustic, and seaside gardens.
