Facilities at Peveril Castle

    The site does not have a car park although ample parking is available at the Castleton visitor centre, which is located between 5 and 10 minutes walk away at the bottom of a hill. A road must be crossed in order to access the site. Payment is by card or coin only. This charge cannot be refunded as the car park is operated by the local council.Charged parking is also available on the roads leading out of the village.

    Food and Drink


    Cold drinks and ice creams are available to purchase from the visitor centre. There are no  food and drink facilities available up at the castle.

    Picnic Area


    Table and chairs are located just outside the visitor centre with views up to the castle. There are also benches on the route up the hill as well as in the castle grounds. In addition, there are a number of flat grassy areas where families can enjoy a picnic whilst taking in the spectacular views of the surrounding Peak District and the nearby village of Castleton.

    The gift shop sells a wide range of English Heritage souvenirs and gifts, including historical books (particularly on the medieval period), soft toys, jewellery, soft drinks, wines, confectionary, replica armour and swords, toy weapons and dressing up clothes.The gift shop is located on the bottom floor of the visitor centre. Access to the shop is via a short slope with handrail (installed only from half way up).

    There is one unisex toilet and one disabled toilet (including baby changing facilities) located in the visitor centre. Visitors should be aware that once they have climbed up to the castle site there will be no toilet facilities available for them to use.

    Dogs are welcome on the site, but we do ask that they are kept on a lead.

    There is a permanent display on the upper floor of the visitor centre. This charts the history of the castle and includes two display cases showing artefacts such as horseshoes and medieval coins. Disabled visitors can access this display via a lift.

    Baby Changing Facilities

    There is one unisex toilet and one disabled toilet (including baby changing facilities) located in the visitor centre. Visitors should be aware that once they have climbed up to the castle site there are no toilet facilities available.

    Play Areas / Adventure Playground

    Although there isn't a formal playground, outdoor games are available from the gift shop. But please note space is limited on site, and unfortunately ball games are not allowed.

    Pushchairs Allowed

    Push chairs are allowed. Families are invited to leave them with us at the bottom of the slope if they wish as it can be a struggle to get them up the hill (however not impossible!).

    Please be aware


    Please note: A handrail covers part of the slope leading up to the castle, although the majority of the walk does not have one.

    Sheep graze on the site in summer months, although they do not venture into the castle itself.

    If you are looking to use one of our sites for commercial, corporate or professional photography or as a filming location, please contact our filming team as soon as possible to check availability and acquire the relevant permissions and paperwork.

    Due to the delicate nature of our sites, English Heritage does not permit drone flying from or over sites in our care, except by contractors or partners undertaking flights for a specific purpose, who satisfy stringent CAA criteria, have the correct insurances and permissions, and are operating under controlled conditions.
