The Making of the Great Tower

The aim of the Great Tower project is to evoke the atmospheric interiors of King Henry II's medieval royal court, creating an immersive world in which the visitor stands at the centre of the experience.

Backed by meticulous research, compelling evidence and an army of skilled craftsmen who have re-created the lavish interiors, from wall hangings, stunning furnishings and over 500 intricate objects, the project is considered the most ambitious attempt to re-create a medieval palace in more than a century.

To learn more about the depth of research that went into the making of the Great Tower, including information on the fascinating craftsmanship involved, download an article from the July 2009 issue of Heritage Today.

The launch of the Great Tower was part of an ongoing wider investment at Dover Castle, funded in part by the Government's Sea Change Programme, which awarded over £10 million to three English seaside resorts in 2009, including the town of Dover.
