Caring for the nation's heritage

From world-famous prehistoric sites to grand medieval castles, from Roman forts on the edges of empire to a Cold War bunker, we look after over 400 places that span 6 millennia and bring the story of England to life.

Conserving and maintaining this collection for all to enjoy is the cornerstone of everything we do. It enables us to make history accessible to all and create memorable experiences to inspire visitors of all ages.

Your support makes a difference

Your enthusiasm may be for the restoration of historic artefacts, the conservation of great ruins or engaging the thousands of school children who visit each year. Supporting English Heritage with a gift in your Will, however large or small, helps ensure that generations to come can enjoy our collection of historic places just as much you do today.

How to leave gifts in wills

Our Promises To You

Thank you for considering leaving a gift in your Will to English Heritage. Gifts in Wills ensure that the story of England survives to educate, involve and inspire future generations.

When you leave a gift to English Heritage in your Will:
  • We will treat your information with the strictest confidence and will only contact you if you have given us permission to do so.
  • We understand that your pledge is in no way legally binding and that your wishes may change over time.
  • We understand that your loved ones come first. Even a gift as little as 1% will enable us to look after the heritage that matters to you long into the future.
  • We will never ask you about the size or type of gift you are thinking of leaving us, as every gift will make a lasting and valued contribution to the work that we do.
  • We are grateful for every gift, large or small, and will ensure they are used where they will have the greatest impact on our work.
  • If you would like your gift to support a specific area of our work or property, we will always try to meet your wishes. We are happy to talk to you before you write or amend your Will to ensure your wishes can be met.
  • You can choose how much you want to hear from us about how gifts like yours are being used to care for England’s historic places. We won’t intrude on your privacy.
  • We will treat your family and executors with integrity and kindness.

Gifts in Action

A legacy gift enabled the creation of the beautiful Princess Beatrice Garden at Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight. The tranquil oasis was designed in the distinctive Edwardian garden style for visitors to enjoy for years to come.

We want our long-standing membership to have on-going depth, and to know that when we are no longer able to enjoy visiting properties and gardens that have become almost personal friends over the years, our gift will help the vitally important conservation work undertaken by English Heritage to continue.

On my frequent visits to Witley Court over many years, I have watched the monumental recovery of this building and its extensive surroundings and decided to include a bequest to English Heritage specifically to support its preservation
