Dover Castle and the Secret Wartime Tunnels

Emergency Information

The Keep will be closed from Monday 8th September because of a photographic survey. The entire inner walls of the Keep are being recorded for conservation purposes.

Explore Dover Castle and revisit the turbulent war years, when the Dover Straits were packed with ships and the skies were filled with enemy planes!

Make time to experience the complex defence systems employed during two World Wars at the fascinating Admiralty Lookout, which has just re-opened following a £1 million refurbishment.  With exciting new interactive displays, why not try your hand at semaphore or Morse code, and learn about the techniques used to detect enemy ships.

Discover the labyrinth of secret wartime tunnels built deep in Dover’s White Cliffs. Sights, sounds and pathe news clips bring the drama of its strategic role in WWII alive. Walk through the rooms where Sir Admiral Ramsay planned the “miracle of Dunkirk” and tour the underground hospital as you follow the story of a wounded wartime pilot.

Above ground, check out one of Europe’s best-preserved Roman lighthouses, visit the siege Experience of 1216 and find out what it may have been like to be a medieval soldier under siege and explore the towering keep with its spectacular views across the channel and its recreation of King Henry VIII’s. With so much to see and do for the whole family and great events throughout the summer it is not surprising that it is one of Kent’s most popular visitor attractions.

Please be aware that access to the Secret Wartime Tunnels is by guided tour only.  Tours are limited to 1000 people a day and are allocated to visitors when purchasing their admission tickets on a first come, first serve basis.  Please arrive early to avoid disappointment.
