Fancy the chance of sharing a bed with Charles I? Well, not exactly snuggling down with the king - but if you stay in this second floor apartment across the courtyard from where Charles was imprisoned at Carisbrooke Castle shortly before his trial in 1648 you may just feel his regal presence.
The King tried to escape but nothing will be further from the thoughts of visitors booking here in the 21st century. As a former service block for resident gentry of the day, this renovated apartment now sleeps four in contemporary comfort.
Walk along the ramparts at dusk and let your imagination conjure thoughts of the advancing Spanish Armada. A more recent royal occupant was Princess Beatrice, daughter of Queen Victoria, whose private garden is now a charming and peaceful retreat in keeping with its original 1913 layout.
Once the gates close to the public, no-one else stays within the castle walls - even the resident donkeys move out to a nearby field. What's more, a day pass to English Heritage's other two properties on the island - Yarmouth Castle and Osborne House - comes with the apartment.
All of our cottages are fully furnished and equipped with TVs, DVD players, CD/ DAB Radio music system, telephone for emergency and incoming calls, hairdryer, iron and ironing board, fridge with freezer compartment, microwave, oven and hob, washerdryer, dishwasher. Linen and towels are provided.

We’ve just returned from a most memorable stay in the Bowling Green Apartment at Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight. The apartment is situated right in the heart of the castle and one had the run of the place before 10am and after 6pm when all was closed to the public. The accommodation is very comfortable and clean. There’s a double bedded room and a room with bunkbeds. Both with view over the stables. The modern bathroom beautifully laid out and lots of lovely fresh white towels and piping hot water! The bed linen and crockery are spotless and of good quality; there was everything one could require for a self catering stay with kids. My husband and I, both over sixty, took our nine year old grandson and his little sister aged two and a half. They loved it. The little one slept in a real bunk bed for the first time, and slept through every night. They loved the castle, the grounds and all the wildlife – bat spotting at dusk, owls in the tree opposite and going down to sit on a bench waiting for the donkeys to come to their stable. The nine year old had freedom to explore and didn’t have to stay in once the little one had gone to bed. They got lots of fresh air and exercise and loved the whole idea of being “in a Castle”. We were most impressed by the freedom to come and go – it’s quite special returning to such an imposing place at the end of a day out, and opening the great gates with a crown on the top to go to park the car overnight. Pauline, the housekeeper, welcomed us on arrival and chatted to the children – producing a little dragon on wheels for our granddaughter to push along while she explained the dos and donts. There was a welcome hamper of eggs, orange juice, milk, cheese, lovely jam and butter as well as a bottle of white wine. Pauline had arranged a big bunch of fresh flowers in a vase on the dining table. In the children’s room there were books and colouring books with crayons etc. and DVDs suitable for all ages. In the living room there’s an excellent TV and dining suite, and the kitchen has all mod cons (dishwasher, washer/dryer, fridge etc) and a view to die for – especially watching the amazing sunsets while doing the washing up! We were all given such a good discount in the shop that we were almost too guilty to buy there. The staff at Carisbrooke were all friendly and even stopped the donkeys for the children to stroke them; never too busy to be friendly and helpful. I cannot recommend this cottage too highly and we will most certainly be returning – if the kids have anything to do with it! Thank you English Heritage for a very special week – we shall treasure the memories for a very long time.
