Facilities at Dover Castle

Parking

Free onsite parking up to 200 vehicles plus a peak-time overflow with a free minibus connection to site. There is another car park in the town centre (at bottom of the hill).

Food and Drink

Our main restaurant, the NAAFI, is housed in the 1868 Regimental Institute, so was used as a restaurant by the soldiers once stationed here. Here we have a full range of hot foods, all freshly cooked on site using local ingredients wherever possible. Some of these are served in traditional medieval pots called Pipkins. We also have sandwiches, home-made soup, local scones, a great range of cakes, plus tubs of local ice cream.

The Keep Coffee Shop, by the Great Tower, was built in 1901 and incorporates some of the inner bailey wall. Here we sell sandwiches and snacks, home-made soup, and a range of cakes and ice cream.

Built into the original Napoleonic Tunnel complex of The Secret Wartime Tunnels, we have a small Tunnels Tea Room alongside the shop. Here we sell a range of sandwiches, cakes and ice cream. You can visit this part of the tunnels even if not doing one of the two guided tours.

On sunny days, event weekends and school holidays, we also open our Ice Cream Parlour, housed in a converted 1895 Meat Store next door to the NAAFI restaurant. Here we sell a fabulous range of local ice cream, made by Solley's, from just up the coast near Deal.

See our Food and Drink page for more details of what we offer at Dover Castle.

Picnic Area

You are very welcome to bring a picnic to eat in the grounds with their spectacular views from the top of the 'White Cliffs' over the English Channel.

There are two shops: the Great Tower shop sells military souvenirs and the Secret Wartime Tunnel shop has a WWII theme. Both shops also offer a wide range of other heritage related gifts.

Male, female and disabled facilities are available in five locations.

Dogs on leads are welcome in the grounds only. Assistance dogs welcome across the site.

Museum

Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment Museum: collection traces the history of the regiment, direct successor of twelve forbear regiments from 1572 through four and a quarter centuries of service to the Crown. The Stone Hut, built in 1912 for the Royal Garrison Artillery, is now used as an archaeological store. On the first Friday of every month (or by pre-arranged booking), visitors can view changing exhibitions of treasures including artefacts from both World War II and the Cold War.

Exhibition

The Great Tower offers pulsed, freeflow self-guided tours. Costumed live interpreters welcome you at the Great Tower on selected days and life-like hologram characters at all other times.

The Secret Wartime Tunnels ‘Operation Dynamo’ tours are part guided by site staff, and numbers per tour are limited to 30 people, setting off at approximately 10 minute intervals (tour lasts approximately 50 minutes). Due to the immersive nature of these visits, no independent guiding is allowed in these areas.

Access to the Underground Hospital (separate access from Operation Dynamo) is by guided tour only (limited to 30 people and lasting approximately 20 minutes), which is included in the admission price.

Please ask site staff upon arrival for the best time to visit the tunnels on that specific day. Groups of 11+ are asked to call the site in advance.
