Few members of the royal family have been quite as enthusiastic about their garden as Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. At Osborne they were able to indulge their desire for a fashionable garden, drawing inspiration from the gardens of Europe. It was also a place where they could experience life away from public scrutiny, taking walks together, planting hundreds of trees and growing fruit, vegetables and cut flowers. In 1999 new life was breathed into the walled fruit and flower garden by designer Rupert Golby as part of the English Heritage Contemporary Heritage Garden initiative.
