Silchester Roman City Walls and Amphitheatre

Please be aware improvement works will be taking place to the footpaths and car park at the above site for 2-3 weeks commencing on the 13th May 2013. The site will remain open but access may be restricted to the car park and parts of the pathways.

Originally a tribal centre of the Iron Age Atrebates, Silchester became the large and important Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum. Unlike most Roman towns, it was never re-occupied or built over after its abandonment in the 5th century, so archaeological investigations give an unusually complete picture of its development.

Please note: Dogs on leads are welcome. Parking is available (operated by Hampshire County Council)
