The Historic and Botanic Garden Trainee Programmes (HBGTP) are part of the Historic and Botanic Garden Bursary Scheme (HBGBS). The Scheme is managed by English Heritage Trust in partnership with other organisations such as the National Trust, Capel Manor College, and the Professional Gardeners Guild.

The aim of the 1 year placement is to provide practical work experience through a broad range of activities within an historic and/or botanic garden. The purpose is for each trainee to develop their practical skills and increase their horticultural knowledge.

It is the intention of the HBGTP and English Heritage that the skills acquired by the trainee as a result of the placement will be used to help sustain and develop the UK historic and botanical garden sector.

The selection process will take into account the applicant's:

- Previous practical experience

- Interest and commitment to work in the sector

- Ability that a placement could develop or enhance

- Self- motivation and ambition

Please note that qualifications are not a requirement for this post.

All placements are salaried positions.

Shortlisting will be conducted by HBGTP staff and representatives from the placement gardens. Please note that the information on your application will be shared with external representatives beyond English Heritage.

Interviews will take place at individual placement gardens in May 2018, and will involve a practical element.

We regret that we are unable to pay expenses for interviews, although special consideration may be given for those traveling from Northern Ireland or from outside the UK.
