Would you like to use your passion and creativity to nurture one of the country's most prestigious gardens and inspire visitors from across the world? Then join us as Head Gardener at Belsay Castle & Gardens; brimming with historic character and exciting gardening opportunities, it offers a remarkable setting in which to take the next step in your career.
You'll be playing a vital role in developing the grounds - Belsay Hall and Castle is a key property within the English Heritage portfolio and attracts around 60,000 visitors each year. Belsay Hall has an exceptional collection of plants in a diverse range of historic settings dating back to the high 'Picturesque period' of the nineteenth century. The garden and landscape are diverse, the bold Italian geometry and formalism contrasts with the exotic naturalism of Quarry Gardens, and the Rhododendron Garden.
Against this backdrop we are seeking someone to take on the role of Head Gardener, reporting to the Property Manager. In addition to the on-going maintenance and management of the garden and landscape, the site will be undergoing a major restoration as part of an HLF project bid, which will include major parts of the gardens and landscape. The project will result in the rejuvenation of the plant collection and features within the iconic Terraces, Woodland Garden and Quarry Gardens as well as the training and development of volunteers and apprentices.
The garden is managed by a team of six gardens staff and trainees, with additional community involvement and the active recruitment of a volunteering team. The post will be based at Belsay Castle and Gardens.
We're looking for someone with a creative eye; high-quality garden management experience; excellent plant knowledge and horticultural skills; and a talent for leadership. You'll find imaginative ways of bringing to life the stories that they tell, helping visitors of all ages to make new discoveries. Managing an enthusiastic, dedicated team of gardeners and volunteers, you'll also play an integral part in our nationwide gardens team, helping to train and inspire the gardening talent of the future. You'll know how to ensure visitors enjoy their day out - from sharing your gardening knowledge, to ensuring their health and safety. Project management, ICT and budgeting skills are also a must for this busy and dynamic role.

You'll find it's a workplace like no other - taking you behind the scenes of these extraordinary sites and supporting you to share your ideas, inspire others and make a difference.
We offer a competitive salary, a generous pension scheme, 25 days holiday (plus bank holidays) and other financial and non-financial lifestyle benefits.
