This hillfort in Devon was built during the 4th century BC. It was used by an Iron Age tribal people, probably for several hundred years. Blackbury Camp had impressive ramparts, and the single entrance was protected by a large triangular earthwork or ‘barbican’. Now surrounded by woodland, the hillfort is a popular spot for picnics.

Every September, Heritage Open Days celebrate England’s heritage and history with free events across the country.
This year the festival is running from Friday 11 to Sunday 20 September 2026.

Access: The hillfort is within a wooded area, parts of which are uneven and can become muddy. Please be aware during the winter and at times of heavy rainfall the moat can fill with water.
Opening times: Open all year round during daylight hours.
Parking: There is a small free car park at the site. Overnight parking or camping is not permitted.
Facilities: There are no facilities at Blackbury Camp, however there are a selection of pubs, cafes and shops in the nearby village of Beer and nearby town of Seaton.
Dogs: Dogs on leads are welcome.

Please be aware: Smoking, vaping, barbecues and naked flames are not permitted.

Visit during late spring to see the fantastic carpet of bluebells and bring a picnic to make the most of this picturesque spot - also a great base for local walks.
