Join Dr Olaf Bayer on a guided hike to explore the atmospheric landscape of the Ridgeway. The walk will include a visit to the early Neolithic long barrow at Wayland’s Smithy, once believed to have been the home of Wayland, the Saxon god of metal working, before continuing on to Uffington ‘Castle’, an outstanding example of an Iron Age hillfort, and the famous White Horse, the oldest chalk-cut hill figure in Britain.
Olaf Bayer is an archaeological investigator with Historic England. He has worked extensively on sites and landscapes in south-west England.
For this event, please meet in Uffington White Horse car park. No refreshments will be provided at this event but you are welcome to bring your own along with you.
This event has challenging access; the walk is 3.5 hours long and will cover 7 kilometres (4.3 miles). There may be some uneven ground. Please dress for the weather with comfortable walking shoes. Please note this event is not suitable for those under 16 years of age.
