This gatehouse is the sole survivor of a small Benedictine priory. A miniature 'pele-tower' containing two storeys of comfortable rooms, it later became a fortified vicarage, a defence against border raiders.

Before You Go

Opening Times: Open daily, 10am-5pm April to September, and 10am-4pm October to March. Closed over Christmas and New Year. 

Access: Steps to the upper floor are uneven - please take care.

Parking: There is no dedicated parking at Wetheral Priory Gatehouse, which is situated immediately on a narrow country road. It is a short five minute walk from Wetheral Village.

Facilities: Nearby Wetheral village has a choice of places to eat and drink.

Explore the fraught and fascinating history of the borders further at nearby Carlisle Castle, a 15 minute drive east of Wetheral. Visit medieval rooms, 19th century military buildings and the exhibition telling the story of the castle's turbulent history.

The tranquil remains of the Lanercost Priory are just over 20 minutes away. It is one of the best preserved monasteries in Cumbria, and has a tearoom, gallery and shop.

The World Heritage sites of Hadrian's Wall are also nearby.
