Members' Lecture: Anatomising the Battle of Hastings

Each year visitors flock to 1066 Battle of Hastings, Abbey and Battlefield in East Sussex to witness a re-enactment of arguably the most famous battle to have been fought on English soil. But what do we really know about what happened there on 14 October 1066?

In this lecture, originally aired on 18 October 2022, Roy Porter examines how the battle was understood and remembered by both the victors and the defeated, how much of what we think we know is by no means certain, and how stories about the battle developed over the century after it was fought.
