Winter sun in the mild Mediterranean

PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

As summer retreats and nights advance in the UK, escaping to the warmer climes of southern Spain or Portugal this winter is a tantalising prospect. Gone are the intense heat and crowds, leaving sunny days, golden sands and quiet roads in front of you.

Plus, winter sun holidays are often more affordable – Brittany Ferries offers fabulous deals on accommodation and ferry travel. In fact, a 28-day stay in Spain starts from just £701pp. Here’s a taster of what destinations are waiting to welcome you.

Cost-effective costas

A great-value option is the Aparthotel Ona Ogisaka Garden in Denia, Costa Blanca. As the name suggests, rooms are nestled within landscaped gardens, and the busy complex suits those who like to socialise, whether in the wellbeing centre, bar and restaurant or with a bike hire.

Denia itself has an impressive marina complex to sit in and watch the world go by. The inquisitive traveller can go further afield to explore historic sites and traditional villages, passing pine-covered mountains along the way.

The relatively unknown Costa del Azahar is further north. Stay in small, family-run Apartamentos Els Romers, which is just 100 metres from the beach and close to Benicarló, with a prison-turned museum in its historic quarter and freshly caught local seafood in the restaurants.

The area is known for orange groves and is a wonderful location for outdoor enthusiasts with plenty of nature reserves and parks to wander through.

The charming Algarve

Close to the Spanish border, Manta Rota village is often the holiday destination choice of the Portuguese and suits those who prefer a more authentic experience. The spacious and simply furnished Praia de Lota Resort Apartments have direct access to Manta Rota’s beach, one of the most beautiful in eastern Portugal. Ria Formosa National Park, a haven for migrating birds, is nearby, and the area is also great for cyclists.

There’s an abundance of attractions in neighbouring towns, such as Moorish architecture, waterfront forts and palm-tree-lined promenades. And don’t forget the golf courses!
