Facilities at Richborough Roman Fort and Amphitheatre

  • Parking

    Free car park for about 30-40 cars. The entrance to the site is down a gravel path. The nearest additional parking is approximately 2 miles away on Richborough Road or Ash Road, Sandwich. Carparks are available in Sandwich such as Gazen Salts carpark.

  • Food And Drink

    Vending machine selling hot drinks. Shop sells a selection of snacks including crisps, cold drinks, confectionery and locally made ice cream. Our picnic benches look out on some of the earliest Roman remains in Britain.
  • Picnic Area

    You are welcome to bring a picnic to eat in the grounds. Six picnic benches are available on site with views of the whole site.

  • Shop

    Gift shop in the visitor centre sells a wide range of English Heritage souvenirs and gifts, including Roman themed items, books, snacks, ice-creams, hot and cold drinks.
  • Toilets

    Toilets are available on site all year round, with both offering some level of disabled access. The closest public toilets are in the Guildhall Car Park in Sandwich (approximately 3 miles away).

  • Dogs

    Dogs on leads are welcome in all outdoor areas. However, we recommend checking the amphitheatre field for farm animals before entering with your dog. If there are animals in the field, we advise against entering with a dog.

  • Museum

    Our delightful refreshed museum is accessible via the shop. The door from the shop to the museum is approximately 750mm wide.

  • Exhibition

    There is a permanent exhibition which describes many aspects of Roman life in the museum.
  • Gardens

    V
    Situated amongst the east Kent marshes, our large open grounds are predominantly laid to grass, with some paths and steps. There is plenty of room for children to play although ball games are not permitted. Kites are allowed away from the ruins.
  • Audio Tours

    Free audio tour in English is included in the admission price. It covers the history of Richborough and the remains that are visible above ground.

    Due to the delicate nature of our sites, English Heritage does not permit drone flying from or over sites in our care, except by contractors or partners undertaking flights for a specific purpose, who satisfy stringent CAA criteria, have the correct insurances and permissions, and are operating under controlled conditions.
