You can book online until 8.45am on the day of your visit. You can still buy a ticket when you arrive, but you won’t get the discount. 

Your booking is only for entry to the site or event, and you may need to pay for parking.

Tickets are valid all day, so you can arrive at any time and stay for as long as you like within our opening hours.

Tickets are free for members. You can still book online if you’d like – just remember to bring your English Heritage membership card.

You can join as a member online or during your visit.

Via level cobbled surface, tarmac and gravel paths, and smooth grass. Level access to magazines, fort square and some underground workings. Grounds have steep slopes or steps to ramparts and some gun emplacements. Exhibition has level access. Shop accessed via three steps. Ramp to currently unused West Gunpowder magazine.

Staircases to the Chapel & Gatehouse are steep and may not be suitable for all ambulant disabled visitors.

Seating And Restpoints
There are benches around edge of the parade ground and one on an elevated position overlooking river near front of fort. Picnic tables are also on the edge of parade ground including one specially designed wheelchair access table.
Pathways Surface And Gradients
There are grass, gravel or cobble stones surfaces. The parade ground is approx. 2.5 acres and is made of rough, uneven cobble stones.

There are Muskets in the shop mounted in a gun rack, cannons and guns in various locations both in the exhibition and around the site, some shells and cannon balls are used to give visitors a tactile experience.

Deep Water
There are two Water Moats. Only accessible to guided tour groups.
Sheer Drop
There are several sheer drops. Particularly near the late 19th and 20th century gun emplacements. Warning signs are in place.
Slip Hazard
The grass and stone areas may be slippery when wet.
Uneven Ground
There is some uneven ground due to age of site and cobbled parade ground. Warning sign located at the entrance.
