SUITABLE FORAdults
Explore spatial stitching, a hands-on method of exploring buildings through photography and embroidery in this workshop with Andrea Couture at Belsay Hall on Tuesday 21 October 2025.
Starting from photographs of architectural spatial conditions that show marks, scars, and traces of building change, participants will learn how to use simple stitching techniques to add thread directly onto printed spatial images. Drawing on research themes of Heritage and Stitched Anastylosis, the session explores how absence in built form can be reconstituted as essence. These stitched lines and textures become a way of reimagining what is missing or absent in a space, turning memory and atmosphere into something visible and tactile.
This event is sutiable for ages 16+. No prior experience with embroidery is needed, just curiosity and willingness to experiement.
By the end of the session, everyone will have created their own stitched card compositions, each a unique response to the stories and atmospheres held within historic buildings at Belsay. All materials will be provided.
