Whitby Abbey Illuminated - Frequently asked questions

We’ve answered some common questions to help you plan your visit to Whitby Abbey Illuminated 2026.

• Do I need to pre-book?

  Pre-booking is optional, but we recommend you do as booking online is cheaper than buying a ticket on the door.

• I'm trying to book a ticket online but your website won't let me?

  Online booking closes at 5pm each day, however, you are welcome to buy a ticket on the door.

• I haven't got a ticket, can I still come?

  Yes, you are very welcome to buy a ticket on the door.

• Is there parking?

  There is a car park located 100 metres from the abbey run by Scarborough Borough Council: Abbey Headland car park

  There is also accessible parking available. Disabled visitors may be sent down by the entrance to the visitor centre; accessible parking is available in the main car park and ramped entrance to the abbey. Parking is chargeable and is owned and managed by Scarborough Borough Council. Wheelchairs are available at the car park entrance and in the visitor centre.

• Is the site accessible?

  The site is accessible, but not every area of the performance element of the event will be fully accessible due to being a promenade performance.

• What is the performance?

  It's a theatrical performance based around Victorian Gothic themes and Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

• Will the evening be scary?

  The event is family friendly and suitable for all ages, however, there will be some spooky elements.

• Can I dress up?

  Yes! We would love to see lots of visitors dressed up. However, it does get very cold at the abbey in the evening so please make sure you are wrapped up warm.

• The weather forecast is really bad, is the event still on?

  Illuminated Abbey is still planning to go ahead. We recommend wearing sensible shoes as the ground can get quite wet and bringing a raincoat in case of bad weather.

  If anything changes and the event is cancelled, we will update our website and Facebook, and if you have pre-booked you will be notified via email and refunded within 10 working days.

• I have an English Heritage membership, do we still need to pay/book for the illuminations?

  As a member, you can book a members ticket which costs less than standard admission. You can buy a ticket on the door but it is cheaper to pre-book online.

• Is it just Illuminations or is there anything else there?

  Along with the illuminations, there is also a Gothic theatrical performance and a range of food and drink, including fish and chips, hot chocolate, warm mead, mulled wine and more.

• Are dogs welcome?

  Dogs on short leads are welcome.

• Can we bring a picnic and blanket?

  You would be very welcome to bring a picnic and blanket but please be aware that it can get quite cold. It is also worth noting the performance is not static and there is a promenade element, so you won't be able to sit in one place to watch the entire performance.

• I'm a CSSC member, what should I do?

  Please book under associated organisations and remember to bring your card with you.

• What time can we arrive?

  This year there are timed tickets for Illuminated Whitby. 

  The event is open till 9pm, Please aim to arrive for your allotted timeslot as this allows for the best flow of visitors.

  Once you have arrived you can stay for as long as you like.

• We are visiting during the day, can we stay on for the performance?

  The abbey closes at 5pm and the event doesn’t begin until 6pm, so you would need to leave and then come back later for Illuminated Abbey.
