Horses through history at Prudhoe Castle

DATE

Sat 22 Aug 2026

TIME

11am - 3pm

LOCATION

Prudhoe Castle

SUITABLE FOR

Everyone

Join us at Prudhoe Castle in Northumberland to see horses re-enacting their roles from the medieval period to the First World War.

Enjoy displays of horses, riders and equipment, and discover the stories of how horses contributed to military life in the north east. Meet the re-enactors and riders and find out about the roles horses played, how they were cared for, and the equipment, weapons and clothing used in the past. Plus see how horses are trained today for re-enactments.

Displays are on all day (between 11am and 3pm) with active riding and weaponry demonstrations at 12pm and 2pm. The event will take place in the grounds, and the inner ward of the castle will also be open for visitors to explore.

Book now as places are limited – there is no entry without a prebooked ticket (including for English Heritage members). Entry is free but your donations in advance or on the day help us to care for Prudhoe Castle.

There will be no guided tours of the castle on the day but with the horse displays there's plenty for visitors of all ages to enjoy.
