The King's Meadows

To celebrate the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, we will enhance and create one hundred meadows at our castles and abbeys, prehistoric stone circles and palaces.

Over the next decade English Heritage – working with Plantlife – will create a natural legacy at 100 of our historic sites, establishing flower-rich grasslands right across England. From Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain to the Jewel Tower in the heart of Westminster, we will be reviving natural meadows which have been lost, and revitalising those that already exist.

Working with artist Ed Kluz, we have created a special illustrated map showing the locations of the King's Meadows.

Flowers show where we will be establishing flower-rich grasslands across England, restoring those that have been lost, and enhancing those that already exist. From Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain to the Jewel Tower right in the heart of Westminster, over the next decade, we will be creating a natural legacy across England.

Our pledge

Since the 1930s and the advent of post-war modern farming practices, the UK has lost 97% of its wild flower meadows. Before that, much of England’s grassland – from meadows, road verges and lawns - would have been home to a much more diverse flora than we have today.
Whilst our sites remain relatively unchanged agriculturally, some of the grassland areas have seen a diminishing botanical diversity over the past century. We have lots of sites where, with the right management, meadows both large and small can flourish. Creating and enhancing wildflower-rich grasslands at these sites will not only benefit nature and our environment, but will also help evoke a sense of surroundings more familiar to their historic occupants.
