What is a tapestry?

A tapestry is a piece of thick fabric with pictures telling a story that are either woven or embroidered on to it. In Anglo-Saxon times, the English were considered to be very skilled in the sort of needlecraft that was used for tapestries – and the Bayeux Tapestry (see below) is even thought to be of English origin.

As well as being used to create wall hangings, tapestry has also been used throughout history to make a wide variety of pieces ranging from tunics to chair backs.  Tapestry weaving was particularly popular in Europe from the 14th to 18th centuries – Henry VIII had as many as 2,000 tapestries in his palaces!

The Bayeux Tapestry

The Bayeux Tapestry is the most famous tapestry ever created. It tells the story of the Norman Conquest, which began with William the Conqueror’s invasion of England in 1066 and resulted in his crowning as king of England after he defeated King Harold at the Battle of Hastings.

The tapestry is an incredible 70 metres long. Some of the final panels on the tapestry are now missing, so originally it would have been even longer! The tapestry’s origins aren’t clear but it’s thought that it was designed at St Augustine’s Abbey in Canterbury, Kent.  Today, the tapestry can be seen in a museum in Bayeux in the north of France.

Create your own tapestry

We’d like you to create a tapestry of your own, telling a story from your life.  You could draw a picture of your family, your best friend, a pet, your first day at school, your favourite book… whatever you like!

How you create your tapestry is up to you.  You could just use one large sheet of paper, or maybe tape together some sheets of A4, or even unfold a cardboard box and paint onto that.  You can paint pictures, cut out felt shapes or coloured bits of paper, use felt-tip pens – just make it as colourful and as eye-catching as you can!
