Lullingstone Roman Villa and the Darent Valley
The remains of the mausoleum at Frog Farm being excavated. There are stone foundations showing half of an octagonal room.

Frog Farm, Twitton

This cemetery was excavated in 1965. It’s close to the Pilgrim’s Way which was a thoroughfare for passing traffic in Roman times.

As well as 80 graves, archaeologists also found evidence of a later octagonal shape mausoleum made of stone and flint.

What was the mausoleum like?

It’s likely that the mausoleum was built in the 3rd century because it was built over the top of some 2nd-century burials.

The building was about 6.7m wide and an octagonal shape. This is different to the square mausoleum at Lullingstone.

At the centre of the mausoleum at Frog Farm there was a square 50cm wide pit containing a small stone box (cist). Inside the cist there was broken roof tile and opus signinum (flooring) and two small pieces of thick lead sheeting.
