One year on since the collapse of part of the east wing at Hurst Castle in Hampshire, and English Heritage announced today that it has completed the stabilisation of the damaged section. The conservation charity will soon complete a new sea defence which will protect the east wing for the next 50 years. English Heritage will then go on to undertake a major study to ascertain how best to protect this most challenging of heritage sites, at the forefront of sea level rise and climate change.

A ground-breaking heritage apprenticeship programme, designed to pass the dying skill of flint-working to a younger generation, was announced today by English Heritage, following a major donation of £11.2m to the charity from the Hamish Ogston Foundation. This is the largest donation ever received by English Heritage.

The long-awaited Stonehenge exhibition and visitor centre will open on Wednesday 18 December. For the first time, visitors will have a proper introduction to one of the world's most important prehistoric monuments. Over 250 objects of international importance will be on display, and the reconstructed face of an Early Neolithic man is a highlight. The immediate surroundings of the stones are also undergoing dramatic improvement.

Victor Horsley (1857-1917), pioneering neurosurgeon and social reformer – who also took a leading role in the successful efforts to eradicate rabies from the UK – has been honoured with an English Heritage Blue Plaque at his former home in Bloomsbury, London.
