English Heritage has commissioned a series of six portraits from artists celebrating the lives of people of the African diaspora whose stories have contributed to England’s rich history. The paintings, by artists Elena Onwochei-Garcia, Clifton Powell, Glory Samjolly, Mikéla Henry-Lowe, Hannah Uzor and Chloe Cox, will be hung at the English Heritage site connected to its subject this summer, alongside a programme of public events.

Middleham Castle was once home to Richard III; through his childhood, as a squire, and adult years as Duke of Gloucester and King. The ruins stand to a good height on three of the four sides and the layout of a central tower with four outer walls makes it the ideal place for students to explore and understand the basic ground plan of a castle and how it was designed to display wealth and power to the surrounding populace.

Built after the Norman conquest as part of a series of castle along the River Tyne, Prudhoe Castle has survived two sieges and is the only Northumberland castle to resist the Scots. Continuously occupied for 900 years, the majority of the surviving buildings date from the 12th century.

Aydon Castle is a fine example of an English fortified manor house. Built as a home over 700 years ago, it was almost immediately fortified due to the outbreak of Anglo-Scottish warfare. Its turbulent history began with a Scottish raid in 1315 where the house was pillaged and burnt, followed by seizure by English rebels two years later. Today it remains almost completely intact, set amongst the Northumberland woodland.
