Discovery Visits at Stonehenge

Learn about Neolithic life by experiencing it at the world famous Stonehenge during a hands-on, expert-led Discovery Visit. Lasting two hours and tailored to key stages 1-3 they're a great way to inspire your students and delve deeper into the history of this World Heritage site. The sessions have been specially developed to provide fun and inspiring education activities, which will support your teaching of the curriculum and their learning back in the classroom.

Our Discovery Visits will be available Monday-Thursday from September 2022.

Stones and Bones - Stonehenge in its Landscape

This session was developed in partnership with the National Trust. Explore Stonehenge and its place within the wider landscape. On an interactive tour, learn about the different stones and building techniques used, and how the monument relates to the solstice alignment. Using role-play, recreate a Bronze Age burial in the landscape, discussing replica objects based on artefacts found in the area and what they can tell us about the people buried here. Maximum class size of 30 per session.

Neolithic Life at Stonehenge

Start with an introduction to Stonehenge and hands-on activities investigating aspects of life before, during and after the monument was constructed, with an opportunity to share findings through class discussion. Then head outside to further explore Neolithic life through interactive activities including object handling in a reconstructed Neolithic house, hazel rod fence construction and making rope from river reeds. Maximum class size of 30 per session.

Myths and Legends

History, Literacy

Discover a world of myths and legends at the stone circle. This two hour, hands-on session includes a trip to the Stones and a tour led by one of our knowledgeable volunteers. Afterwards, the group will return to our dedicated education room to create their own myths using LEGO® StoryStarter kits. At the end of the session, the groups will be asked to share what they have built and re-tell their stories to the class.

  • Facilities
    • FACE MASKS: Face coverings are not mandatory but we do encourage you and your group to wear them where possible in other enclosed spaces. Our staff and volunteers will continue to wear face masks on our shuttle bus service and all other indoor spaces for your safety. We won’t be able to give you a face covering, so if your group do want to wear one, please come prepared.
    • STONEHENGE: The stone circle, exhibition and visitor centre are all open for you to enjoy.
    • SHUTTLE BUS: The shuttle bus is available for school groups to use.
    • PARKING: Free coach parking is available. A maximum parking of 2 hours is allowed on site.
    • EDUCATION ROOM: Our education room is not available at this time. Please check this page for future updates.
    • TOILETS: There are currently limited toilets available due to site maintenance work so please allow plenty of time for your group to use the facilities. Accessible toilets are available. Additional hand sanitising stations will be available across the site.
    • LUNCH: Unfortunately there is no indoor lunch space. A takeaway catering offer will be provided in our outdoor seating area or you are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy near the stones.
    • SHOP: As this space can get busy during peak times, we ask that you only bring in groups of 10 max at any one time.

    We offer free self-led education visits during school term time*

    *Free education visits are not offered on UK public holidays or during the operation of additional fee paying public events at English Heritage sites.

    • 1 April-27 May: Monday-Sunday 9:30-5pm. Discovery Visits available Tuesday-Thursday
    • 28 May-4 September: Monday-Sunday 9:30-7pm. Discovery Visits available Tuesday-Thurdsay
    • 5 September-31 March: Monday-Sunday 9:30-5pm. Disovery Visits available Monday-Thursday
