  Parking

  Parking in the town of Bolsover is free, including the Bolsover Castle car park. Please click here for a map of available car parks (PDF, 600KB). 

  Road access

  The castle is located on Castle Street, off the A632 in the town of Bolsover, 6 miles east of Chesterfield. If you are travelling to the castle via the M1, we recommend leaving the motorway at junction 29A and following the brown signs from there.

  Bus access

  It’s easy to reach Bolsover Castle by bus from Chesterfield, Mansfield, Sheffield. Stagecoach services 1, 2, 49, 53 and 53a all pass close to the castle entrance. Plan your travel with Traveline.info. 

  Train access

  Chesterfield train station is 6 miles away from the castle.

  Bicycle access

  National Cycle Routes 6, 62 and 67 pass within a few miles of Bolsover.

• Facilities

  Food and drink

  There is a large café at the entrance, with lovely views of the Riding House. Child sized portions and high chairs are available. Vegetarian choices are available and we can make sandwiches to order, just ask the café staff.

  Picnic area

  There’s a large grassed, picnic area with picnic benches. You are welcome to bring your own picnic or grab some goodies from the café.

  Shop

  Our shop sells a wide selection of English Heritage gifts, including mead, jams, chutneys, toys, books, stationery, cards, collectables and much more. There’s also a second-hand bookshop in the viewing gallery of the Riding House.

  Toilets

  Toilets, including accessible toilets, are located in the visitor centre. There are also some toilets next to the Riding House. Baby changing facilities are available.

  Dogs

  Dogs on leads are welcome in the grounds only. Unfortunately, dogs (other than assistance dogs) are not allowed in the Little Castle, Riding Range or Cavalier Horsemanship displays.

  Audio tours and guidebooks

  An audio tour with hearing loop is included in admission price (subject to availability).The tour covers the whole site, from the entrance right through the Little Castle. A child-friendly version of the audio tour is available. Guidebooks are available to purchase and we also have some information sheets in German and French, just ask in the visitor centre.

  Play areas/adventure playground

  The wooden outdoor play area has been designed to look like a mini-Bolsover Castle with swings, a slide and wooden 'battlements' and towers. A dressing up box can be found in the Riding House and there’s plenty of space in the gardens around the Venus fountain for kids to run around.

  Please be aware

  Smoking, vaping, barbecues and naked flames are not permitted. Pushchairs are welcome at the site although there are steps around the Little Castle so you may want to leave the pushchair outside.

  Assistance dogs are welcome across the site.

  Wheelchair access

  The Little Castle is not accessible to wheelchair users (there are 107 steps up to the top of the Little Castle and 100 down to the bottom). Interpretation boards about the castle are located in the Riding House. The Terrace Range, Venus Garden and parts of Riding House and Stables have level access and impacted gravel paths with good viewpoints. There is wheelchair access to some parts of the Riding House and Terrace Range although it is subject to seasonal changes, please call 01246 822844 in advance of your visit for further details. Visitors with limited mobility can be dropped off outside the visitor centre (there’s no need to book in advance).

  Disabled parking and accessible toilets

  There is disabled parking 50 metres from the site entrance, and visitors with limited mobility can be dropped off outside the visitor centre (there’s no need to book in advance). There are accessible toilets in the visitor centre.

  Lighting

  The whole site is normally pretty bright although there are areas of low light in the cellar of the Little Castle.

  Audio

  There are audio induction loops in the visitor centre while audio installations have transcripts and any films presented include subtitles.

  Hazards

  Watch out for rabbit holes in the grassy areas of the site and the grounds can be uneven. There are sheer drops outside the castle walls. Some of the steps around the castle are narrow and uneven, and some areas may be slippery when wet. Please be aware that there may be moving vehicles on the site.
