Brutal and Beautiful: Saving the Twentieth Century
25 SEPTEMBER - 24 NOVEMBER 2013, QUADRIGA GALLERY
From cathedrals to private houses, war memorials to sculptures, our new exhibition celebrates the post-war era and its best listed buildings. It is 25 years since the first major post-war buildings were listed.
Now the Royal Festival Hall and Coventry Cathedral are popularly admired but at the time post-war listings were fiercely debated and the future Tate Modern was rejected. Brutal & Beautiful looks at our love/hate relationship with England's recent architectural past and asks 'what is worth saving?'
Using stunning photography and video interviews with architects and clients of post-war listed buildings the exhibition will show what makes the post-war era special and why the very best of its buildings are worthy of protection.
